How to Fix Lags in Medibang Paint [Solved]

Medibang Paint is one of Android and iPad’s most popular drawing apps. Medibang is also available on Windows and MacOS.

Sometimes, Medibang Paint feels slow on my iPad, taking too much time to open. Sometimes, I felt lag when I was drawing with Medibang.

In this article, I will provide a step-by-step guide on how to improve performance and eliminate lag. This guide applies to all versions of Medibang Paint, including the Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS and iPad OS versions.

Note that I am writing this article with the version of Medibang on my iPad Pro with Apple M1 chip.

Why is Medibang Lagging?

There are many reasons why Medibang feels laggy.

Lagging happens when there’s a delay as the app gathers resources from the memory, storage, and CPU. Medibang will lag if you use too many layers when you’re working with Medibang.

Medibang has minimal and recommended system requirements you should know.

Using a budget smartphone and laptop makes you more likely to experience lags when drawing in Medibang.

Besides insufficient system resources, Medibang is easy to lags because it’s not as optimized as other drawing apps. CSP, Procreate and Krita have better developer teams than Medibang Paint.

Ads also cause lags for the free users of Medibang. Ads are refreshed every few minutes, and for a budget Android smartphone, ads alone can cause Medibang Paint to crash.

How to Fix Lags in Medibang Paint

Solution 1: Disable Ads in Medibang Paint

You should disable ads because ads are one of the most common reasons Medibang Paint feels laggy. Sadly, the only way to turn off ads is to purchase Medibang Premium.

Of course, it’s not worth it since Procreate and CSP are much better if you want to purchase a professional drawing app.

So you just need to turn off your internet and Wi-fi connection while you’re drawing in Medibang Paint. This will turn off ads since there is no internet connection.

Solution 2: Reduce Brush Correction or Stabilization

Reduce brush correction in Medibang

Correction or stabilization in Medibang can make your line smooth and straight. But sometimes, the correction value is too high and causes delay, so you should reduce the value.

To reduce the correction, first, select a brush; for example, I choose the pencil brush. Then tap the triple dot more option and adjust the correction value.

Usually, the default value is 0, depending on which brush is currently selected.

Solution 3: Enable or disable Windows Ink

Try to turn Windows Ink on or off in both your Windows settings and your drawing tablet driver if you use Windows 10 and Windows 11

Turn on the “Let me use the pen as a mouse in some desktop apps” option on Windows.

Solution 4: Restart Your System

Try to restart your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or PC, depending on which you use for Medibang.

Don’t do a shutdown, since in Windows and MacOS, shutdown is no different than sleeping.

So it would help if you restarted to delete the temporary cache and data that caused Medibang to lag.

To restart your iPad, Open Settings, tap the General menu and choose Shutdown.

Solution 5: Close Unused Applications

If you use too many apps, they will compete for memory and CPU resources that Medibang should use to process your drawing and painting.

To prevent lag in your app, close any unused applications. Be aware that some apps, even if closed, can still run in the background.

It would help to manually close the background apps to free up your system resources.

Follow these steps

Windows 10 & 11

Step 1: Press Ctrl + Shift+Esc on your keyboard to open Windows Task Manager

Step 2: Click the Memory tab

Step 3: Find the app you want to close, right-click on it, and select the End Task option.

Note: Close the XBoxStat.exe process, as it can conflict with Clip Studio Paint.

MacOS

Step 1: Open Launchpad and search for Activity Monitor.

Step 2: Select the Memory tab

Activity monitor on Mac

Step 3: Choose which app you want to close. Double-click the app

Step 4: Select the Quit button to end the app

Android & iOS

You can manually close an app by swiping up an app after opening the list of running apps.

You can also install any App Cleaner from the Play Store and iOS App Store to do it for you.

Solution 6: Reduce Resolution, Canvas size, and DPI value

If you’re using an older computer or budget with less than 4 GB of RAM, a large canvas and high resolution might cause lag.

Choose a small canvas and resolution size when starting a new project.

This is my recommended setting:

Resolution: 1000 x 1000 px to 2000 x 2000 px

DPI: 72

Solution 7: Reduce the Number of Layers Used

Layers are an essential feature for artists, but they consume too much memory if you don’t know how to manage layers in Medibang.

The more layers you use, the more memory is consumed.

If you don’t have enough memory on your system, you should try to reduce the number of layers by merging two layers or deleting one of them.

Depending on the project’s complexity, I usually limit the number of layers to 15.

Solution 8: Reinstall the Drawing Tablet Driver

If you use Medibang on Windows or Mac, you absolutely need a drawing tablet, be it Wacom, Huion or XP-Pen.

Sometimes, if the driver for your drawing tablet is corrupted, it can cause random issues whenever you use it.

It’s best to re-download the driver directly from the drawing tablet brand’s official website.

Use the following links to access your drawing tablet’s driver page:

Wacom driver page

Huion Driver Page: https://www.huion.com/download/

Solution 9: Reinstall Medibang Paint

If Medibang keeps lagging, you must try reinstalling Medibang Paint to reset all settings.

On Windows and Mac, you can manually uninstall the application and redownload it on their website: https://medibangpaint.com/en/app-download/

If you use Medibang on iPhone or iPad, follow these steps:

Step 1: Backup your gallery data to iCloud

Step 2: Close all apps

Step 3: Press/tap on the Medibang app icon until a menu appears.

Step 4: Select the Remove App option to delete Medibang from your iPad.

Step 5: Restart your iPad.

Step 6: Open App Store

Download Medibang Paint for iPad

Step 7: Download and install Medibang again

For Android, the steps are similar. You just need to redownload Medibang on the Play Store.
